That's not to say it is not without its charms, the foremost of which is its stunningly diverse selection of racing alternatives. In speed mode, you'll hurtle through long and accommodating paved racecourses at breakneck speed, the wind buffeting your helmeted head as you negotiate wide straightaways and huge sweeping corners. In supercross/motocross mode, you'll bounce and be bounced over a series of sadistically undulating dirt tracks, thrilling to the inevitable air time you'll experience yet struggling to keep your tires on the ground, where they can translate the power you so dearly want to apply. As a freestyle rider, you'll use ramps, knolls, moguls, and whatever other launching devices you'll find strewn about the vicinity to grab the biggest air and perform the most death-defying stunts before the constantly ticking timer counts down to zero. In the trials mode, you'll slowly and meticulously balance and maneuver your steed over an obstacle course designed to topple you to the ground at just the slightest miscue, and in traffic mode you'll blitz through the virtual streets of downtown Paris, trying to outride your single opponent to the finish line without first being beaten into escargot by a frenzied Parisian rush-hour motorist.

If all this sounds like fun, that's because it often is. Moto Racer 3's physics model and track designs are simplistic enough for absolute rookies yet not so primitive as to completely alienate experienced players. Its racing parameters are extremely varied and downright exhilarating. Certainly the raw sense of speed of its traffic mode and the raw sense of flight in supercross/motocross are almost worth the price of admission. Almost. The sad truth is that from start to finish, Moto Racer 3 gives the impression that it quite probably should have undergone extensive additional tweaking before being pushed out the door.

You'll die a lot in this brutal puzzle stunt racer, but you'll love every minute of it.
General Features

Some people revel at the thought of pain. To some, it's a turn on. I used to think these masochistic folk were crazy, but Trials 2: Second Edition, developer Redlynx's brutal motorcycle racer, shows us pain can be fun. Unlike most racing games, there are no on-screen opponents in Trials 2. Your goal is simple: maneuver through dangerous obstacles to reach the end of the level. Although the game initially looks like a shallow stunt game, it's actually one of the more challenging physics-based puzzlers today. You're going to die a lot, and you're going to have fun doing it. Kids, DO try this at home. (The game, not suicide.)

There are a lot of punishing videogames throughout history (Ninja Gaiden, Ghosts 'n Goblins, Shaq Fu--the last one painful in its own sadistic way), but nothing in recent memory has managed to kill me as many times as Trials 2. Beelzebub himself would not be able to conjure up some of the game's devilish levels. Each track has multiple checkpoints. When you break bones or die you will continue from the last checkpoint, but your time trial score suffers as your death toll increases. Trying to finish some of these levels is difficult in its own right. Factoring time into the equation only makes it more challenging. The game features multiple camera angles, including a first-person mode, but is most easily played from a 2D perspective.

F.E.A.R.2 Reborn

After a summer of free monthly DLC packs that added new multiplayer modes and features to F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin, the developers at Monolith have turned their attention back to the single player experience. In doing so comes F.E.A.R. 2: Reborn, a purchasable downloadable content pack that includes an all-new campaign. However, the story doesn't continue from the main game's cliffhanger ending. Instead, it puts players into the role of a replica soldier named Foxtrot 813 who has been "liberated" from his drone-like existence by the psychic call of Paxton Fettel. From then on, players must make their way to the Origin Facility, ground zero for the psychic explosion, where Fettel awaits.

F.E.A.R. 2: Reborn gives players a different point of view with a new kind of character, but players mostly end up doing the same thing as always, namely take up arms and shoot everything between you and your destination. Fellow replica soldiers turn on you when it becomes clear you've lost connection to command and essentially went rogue, indicating that there's not a whole lot of camaraderie among cloned supersoldiers. Thanks to Fettel's mental awakening, Foxtrot 813 has access to the same super reflex time slowing abilities that all the F.E.A.R. main characters tend to have. The game has a strong opening sequence where you get to blast through Armacham forces from inside an EPA mech suit, but it also sets expectations. The entire game is spent fighting the same old foes using all the same F.E.A.R. 2 guns. So anyone looking for some kind of radical gameplay change to go along with the new role will be very disappointed. However, the campaign features some excellent level design, including having to navigate through the disorienting insides of a collapsed office building.

The campaign is fantastically short and most players will probably get through Reborn in about 2-4 hours, depending on individual skill and difficulty setting. In that time, players get a fully distilled F.E.A.R. 2 experience. Reborn quickly throws some of the game's most difficult enemies at you, hardly giving you a chance to catch your breath, and then ends suddenly. The story doesn't directly involve Alma this time, but she still manages to drop in using her adolescent form. It's refreshing to have a story that's not completely based around Alma, but although she doesn't have enough personal interest in you to mess with your mind, she hates you nonetheless and will send groups of commando supersoldiers to take you out. However, other than Fettel's intermittent beckoning, the plot doesn't really go any anywhere except to a fairly lame cliffhanger ending that sets up Reborn as the first chapter of an ongoing side story. At no point does Reborn offer any new insight into the events of the main game. We hope that future content releases will relate more to the main plot, but as things stand now, Reborn ends up being a big tease for things to come.
